Communications Officer

The Communications Officer will work on the day-to-day implementation of Library Aid Africa's organisational and program communications, ensuring that the organisation's work, impact, knowledge and opportunities are effectively communicated to diverse audiences. The role will be responsible for developing and executing communication campaigns, producing compelling content, managing digital channels, supporting media and press engagement, and strengthening Library Aid Africa's institutional voice and visibility.

Key Responsibilities

Organisational Communications

  • Develop and implement online communication plans for key organisational activities, campaigns, events and international observances, including International Literacy Day, International Book Day and other relevant global and African library and education events.
  • Collaborate with program teams to develop communication strategies for Programs, campaigns, initiatives and major organisational activities.
  • Ensure consistency in Library Aid Africa's messaging, tone, visual identity and public positioning across communication channels.li
  • Maintain an up-to-date communications calendar aligned with organisational priorities.

Communicating Program Impact

  • Work with Program teams to develop impact-focused communication strategies for Library Aid Africa's Programs and initiatives.
  • Identify stories, achievements, milestones and human-interest narratives that demonstrate the organisation's impact.
  • Develop compelling articles, stories, case studies, social media content, visuals and other communication materials that communicate Program outcomes and impact.
  • Translate technical Program information and data into accessible and engaging content for different audiences.
  • Coordinate the documentation of Program activities through stories, interviews, photographs, videos and other appropriate media.

Website & Newsletter

  • Develop and regularly update website content to ensure that the organisation's work, Programs, opportunities, partnerships and impact are accurately represented.
  • Develop and manage the organisation's newsletter, including content planning, production, distribution and performance monitoring.
  • Produce thought-provoking articles, opinion pieces, stories and other editorial content that contribute to Library Aid Africa's institutional thought leadership.
  • Coordinate contributions from Program and knowledge teams for the website, newsletter and other institutional platforms.

Social Media Management

  • Develop and execute social media content in line with Library Aid Africa's organisational and Program communication priorities.
  • Manage the organisation's social media publishing calendar and ensure consistent content delivery.
  • Develop strategies to increase audience reach, engagement, visibility and conversion across relevant digital platforms.
  • Analyse social media performance and provide regular insights and recommendations to improve content and audience engagement.

Media & Press Relations

  • Build and maintain professional relationships with relevant media organisations, journalists, editors and sector publications.
  • Develop and distribute press releases, media statements, announcements and other media materials.
  • Coordinate media requests, interviews and engagements involving Library Aid Africa and its representatives.
  • Maintain a database of relevant media contacts and opportunities.

Key Deliverables

The Communications Officer will be expected to deliver:

  • A regularly updated organisational communications plan and calendar.
  • Effective communication campaigns for key organisational Programs, events and initiatives.
  • Consistent, high-quality content across Library Aid Africa's digital platforms.
  • Regular Program impact stories, articles, case studies and multimedia content.
  • A well-maintained and informative organisational website.
  • A regular and engaging organisational newsletter.
  • Increased social media reach, engagement and audience growth.
  • Stronger relationships with relevant media and sector publications.
  • Regular communications performance reports and actionable insights.
  • A growing portfolio of institutional thought-leadership content.
  • A well-organised library of communication assets and impact stories.

Key Performance Indicators

Performance may be assessed against:

  • Quality and consistency of organisational communications.
  • Growth in digital reach and audience engagement.
  • Website traffic, content performance and user engagement.
  • Newsletter growth, open rates and engagement.
  • Quantity and quality of Program impact stories produced.
  • Media placements and quality of media relationships established.
  • Timeliness of organisational announcements and campaign communications.
  • Performance of major communication campaigns.
  • Quality of communication support provided to Programs and organisational teams.
  • Contribution to Library Aid Africa's visibility, credibility and thought leadership.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree/HND in one of the following or a related field: Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Media and Communication, Digital Media, International Development or a related discipline. Additional professional training or certification in communications, digital marketing, public relations, content strategy or related fields will be an advantage.

Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

  • At least 2–4 years of relevant professional experience in communications, media, public relations, digital communications, content creation or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing communications strategies or campaigns.
  • Demonstrated writing, editing and storytelling skills.
  • Experience communicating Program impact, research or development-related work is an advantage.
  • Experience managing organisational or institutional social media platforms.
  • Experience developing website and newsletter content.
  • Experience working with media outlets, journalists or other external communication stakeholders.
  • Experience working with NGOs, social enterprises, development organisations, libraries, education, technology or related sectors is desirable.
