Librarians-in-Tech Event
Host: Umma Kaltumi Ibrahim
Umma hosted a Librarians-in-Tech event in Lafia, Nasarawa State, the first of its kind in her library. She brought together 34 participants, including library staff and students at the e-library in Nasarawa state, Nigeria.
They spoke about the realities of working in libraries today, the challenges professionals face, the gaps in service delivery, and the limited conversations around the future of libraries. Participants shared their thoughts on what needs to change and practical ways they can lead these changes.
While 34 people attended, even more expressed interest but could not join due to limited resources. This points to a clear demand and interest by library professionals who are eager for opportunities to connect, learn, and contribute to shaping their field. The event also revealed a deeper need for community-level engagement in the library space. There is growing interest among professionals to rethink their roles and actively participate in the development of their communities through library technology.

There was strong anticipation for the upcoming LibraryXAfrica program, with participants showing interest in building practical, relevant skills they can apply in their work. Umma’s event signals both the need and the opportunity to continue supporting librarians with the platforms, skills, and community they need to drive change.
