Alumni Spotlight: Namakau Mayungo Leads Beyond the Library

Today, we are spotlighting Namakau Mayungo, a 2021 alumna of the Young African Library Leaders Fellowship from Zambia, who has taken her commitment to community service far beyond the walls of her library.

As an Assistant Librarian at the Kimasala Public Library, Namakau has made it her mission to meet people where they are. She regularly conducts community engagement sessions in markets, schools, and informal gatherings, identifying the most pressing information needs of the people she serves and connecting them with the right resources and experts. Since 2021, she has organised over 20 community sessions, reaching more than 1,000 community members on topics ranging from entrepreneurship and mental health to climate-smart agriculture and gender-based violence.

Her work is a powerful testament to what happens when a library leader decides to bring the library to the people.
